Back in the 1920s, Amadeus Arkham witnessed his mother's descent into madness and as an adult, he became the architect and first administrator of Arkham Asylum, a mental institution dedicated to help the criminally insane and prevent them from being taken into the regular penal system. Arkham renovated the family manor into the asylum following his subsequent inheritance of the property after his mother committed suicide. The graphic novel was the first Batman story to be written by Morrison before becoming a regular writer in future Batman titles. Inspired by previous works like The Dark Knight Returns, Morrison conceived the story to be his own different approach to the character, using heavy symbolical references and the deconstruction of many iconic Batman villains.

The asylum serves as a (forensic) psychiatric hospital for the Gotham City area, housing patients who are criminally insane, as well as select prisoners with unusual medical requirements that are beyond a conventional prison's ability to accommodate. Its high-profile patients are often members of Batman's rogues gallery. The inmates of Arkham Asylum have taken over Gotham's detention center for the criminally insane on April Fool's Day, demanding Batman in exchange for their hostages. Accepting their demented challenge, Batman is forced to endure the personal hells of the Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Two-Face and many other sworn enemies in order to save the innocents and retake the prison. Two parallel stories
The story is interspersed with flashbacks to Arkham founder Amadeus Arkham's life and childhood. These flashbacks reveal that he was inspired to become a psychiatrist because of his mother's mental illness. Batman returns Two-Face's coin back from Dr. Adams, stating that it should be up to Two-Face to decide his fate. Two-Face then declares that if the coin lands scratched side up they kill Batman, otherwise they let him go. Batman leaves the Asylum and the inmates peacefully return to their cells, except for Two-Face, who looks at the moon and it is revealed that the coin landed scratched side up. Dave McKean drew the principal art and the cover art of the Arkham Asylum graphic novel with Morrison supplying their own thumbnail layouts to the artist as guide of how the author wanted the panels in each page to function coherently.

The repressed, armored, uncertain and sexually frozen man in Arkham Asylum was intended as a critique of the '80s interpretation of Batman as violent, driven, and borderline psychopathic. My own later portrayal of Batman in the JLA comic was one which emphasized the character's sanity and dignity. In the sequel The Dark Knight Strikes Again, it is revealed that the patients have taken over and have resorted to cannibalism.
In the last 5 years, his books have won a number of major industry awards, including multiple Eisner Awards. Morrison has also won several Harvey Awards including Best Writer in 2009, a Scream Award and attained Lifetime Achievement status at the British Eagle Awards. In 1997, Grant was the first comic book writer to be included as one of Entertainment Weekly's top 100 creative people in America.
Plastic Man is one of the more notable patients in this version of Arkham Asylum. Black Orchid, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Dave McKean, also featured Arkham Asylum. The award-winning graphic novel introduced an updated version of the crimefighter Black Orchid, who dies, is reborn and starts a quest to find her identity.

It is almost difficult to understand them, a feature that somehow conveys the idea of madness and the difficulty of understanding the character. My Joker, bent and whipped like a sapling in a breeze, was a damaged human being reacting to every shift in the zeitgeist, every change in the weather, by constructing a new personality in response. This made him a man of a million false fronts – as he was described by Bill Finger in a very early story. Rolling with the flow made him unstable, prone to revision at the drop of a purple hat, but true to decades of stories. A solid belief of the superhero that, in Arkham Asylum, seems severely shaken. Arkham Reborn is a three-part miniseries written by David Hine and illustrated by Jeremy Haun. It tells the story of the rebuilding of the Asylum after having been destroyed by Black Mask during the events of "Battle for the Cowl". Originally, Arkham Asylum was used only to house genuinely mentally ill patients having no connection to Batman, but over the course of the 1980s, a trend was established in having the majority of Batman's adversaries end up at Arkham. The work of Gaspar Saladino then ensures that the personality of each character also shines through the lettering. The fonts are strongly personalized and vary from character to character.
Batman decides to take the narrow path, even if the Joker tells him “don’t forget — if it ever gets too tough… there’s always a place for you here”, suggesting that the world outside that is the real madhouse. It’s what makes him different from those who give in to madness instead of controlling it. In the first, there’s an image of the moon in the night sky, while in the last the moon is represented within a tarot card.

Reacting instinctively, she slashes it across Cavendish's throat, killing him. In flashbacks, it is shown that Arkham's mentally ill mother, Elizabeth, suffered delusions of being tormented by a supernatural entity.
We were also referencing sacred geometry, and the plan of the Arkham House was based on the Glastonbury Abbey and Chartres Cathedral. The journey through the book is like moving through the floors of the house itself. The graphic novel was reprinted with Detective Comics # –a storyline entitled "Made of Wood," also written by Brubaker with art by Zircher. In the storyline, Batman and Green Lantern track the "Made of Wood" serial killer, whose killing spree was cut short when he was admitted to Arkham Asylum. Ex-Commissioner James Gordon is also pursuing the killer and he narrows the search down to the two men admitted to Arkham in December 1948, the only living one hardly able to walk and ignorant of the killings.
The story's themes were inspired by Lewis Carroll, quantum physics, Jung, and Crowley; its visual style by surrealism, Eastern European creepiness, Cocteau, Artaud, Švankmajer, the Brothers Quay, etc.
For example, a Greek inscription can be seen scratched on the doorway of Maxie Zeus's electroshock chamber, which translates into "Discover thyself"; much of the symbolism was later explained and expanded in the annotated script. I had heard a lot of great things about this book and honestly speaking, I didn't enjoy it very much at all.The art which is technically nicely done, just wasn't to my liking, whilst the story never managed to grab a hold of me, neither the Amadeus Arkham thread or the Joker/Batman story. The lettering was in my opinion, not well done as it made it quite hard to read at times (This one is very much a preference thing surely). This story makes a few passing references to the events of A Serious House on Serious Earth, such as Amadeus Arkham taping over the mirror, and his journal is shown early in the story. Already famous for designing the covers of Neil Gaiman‘s Sandman, Dave McKean uses a style made up of painting, photography, sculpture and even computer graphics.

Batman is forced into a game of hide and seek, and told he has one hour to make his way through the maze-like corridors and find a way out before his old foes are sent to find him. Batman fights his way through Arkham and his own subconscious, fighting some of his most dreaded enemies until he reaches a secret room high in the towers of the asylum - a room left unchanged from the days when the property served as Amadeus Arkham's childhood home.
